Visible Measures Taps Altiscale's Hadoop-as-a-Service as Key Component for Its Growing Content Marketing Platform

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) PALO ALTO, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 09/17/14 -- Altiscale, Inc., a leading innovator in Hadoop-as-a-Service (HaaS) solutions, today announced that Visible Measures Corp., the industry's first engagement platform for branded content, has selected the Altiscale Data Cloud as a key component for its content marketing solution. Visible Measures selected Altiscale over multiple options, as the company needed a strategic partner and long-term solution capable of meeting its goals for both growth and performance. The Altiscale Data Cloud is the industry's only cloud service purpose-built to run Apacheā„¢ Hadoop® at scale with full operational support and gives Visible Measures the scale and support it needs to extract insights from this immense data set.

"We've been using Hadoop since its early days, so we're familiar with the technology's potential. Despite our expertise, we knew we needed to outsource our Hadoop implementation. It wasn't just about cost. We knew that Altiscale could get this important part of our business up and generating revenue quickly." Altiscale is unlike other HaaS offerings in that it is designed to run Apache Hadoop for its customers. That means that not only is Hadoop deployed on the customer's behalf, Altiscale monitors, manages, fixes, and updates it for its entire customer base 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. What's more, all of this is done on custom infrastructure that has been designed from the ground up by industry veterans to run Hadoop. The result is the best Hadoop platform anywhere in the world.

Visible Measures, a media company specializing in video and native content, analyzes the performance of video marketing efforts and helps its customers optimize their advertising through the world's most comprehensive video data "footprint." Visible Measures monitors over 550 million videos a day and how more than 380 million consumers engage with these videos. This gives the company an unprecedented pool of data from which to gather insights. Visible Measures faced two issues for which it required a long-term, strategic solution; the continued growth of its data sets, as well as a need to shift the company's analytics output to reflect real-time responses. At a high level they determined they would need to outsource this Hadoop implementation in order to avoid the staffing and operational costs associated with doing this on premise. The company looked at three options for outsourcing the new product.

First, they could use a systems integrator that would install an on-premise Cloudera distribution, which would then be managed by a contractor team onsite. This option proved cost prohibitive. The second option was to run the product at Amazon Web Services. In evaluating this course of action, Visible Measures rejected Amazon's Hadoop solution, Elastic MapReduce, because of performance issues. However, the company still investigated employing raw computing resources from AWS through EC2. In the end, they concluded that the management and operational resources required to operate in the AWS environment still exceeded cost thresholds set for the project. "This wasn't just 'dollars over time,'" said Meisl. "It also had to do with how quickly we could get this critical part of our business up and running, so we could generate revenue." After considerable investigation of other alternatives, Visible Measures selected Altiscale. The choice came down to one simple fact; the Altiscale Data Cloud enabled Visible Measures to get the performance they needed, without having to hire an internal operations team to manage their Hadoop cluster.

"The Altiscale Data Cloud enables our customers to get to market quickly, at significantly reduced risk, when compared to on-premise solutions," said Raymie Stata, CEO of Altiscale. "Companies can avoid hiring unnecessary operational resources and allow their data science team to do what they do best." The Altiscale Data Cloud is available today.
