Telefnica's bid for wireline operator GVT has been accepted, beating out rival offers from Telecom Italia. BMI highlights the greater potential for converged service offerings for Telefnica on completion of this deal, leveraging its superior mobile subscriber base into expanded multiplay offerings with fixed line telephony, broadband internet and pay-TV services.
The Brazilian market continues to record growth in these four sectors and there are attractive opportunities in the broadband internet and pay-TV segments in particular. Telefnica faces strong competition in this arena from Amrica Mvil, which operates Claro in the mobile sector and owns wireline providers Net Servios and Embratel. Amrica Mvil launched its first quadruple-play offering in August 2013 and is looking to complete the integration of its three units under the Claro brand by the end of 2014, having been approved by the antitrust regulator in August 2014.
This move will consolidate its mobile, fixed and pay-TV customers, increase brand awareness and lower operational costs, creating an even stronger player in the Brazilian telecoms market. With a stronger Telefnica and Amrica Mvil, O and Telecom Italia will need to improve their own converged service offerings to remain competitive.

The mobile market continues to expand but at a slower pace. Total subscriptions reached 279.9mn in Q214, up by 3.8% y-o-y, while penetration reached 138.5%. LTE subscriptions reached 3.27mn at the end of Q214, showing good growth since the technology was launched in H113. Vivo is the market leader with 1.281mn LTE connections and 39.2% of the total.
